Useful information and tips for students in Graz

Graz perfectly blends urban and rural lifestyles, making it an ideal heaven for students. With around 60,000 students, the city buzzes with youthful energy and offers a vibrant cultural scene alongside serene green spaces. Graz provides everything from lively city life to peaceful spots for relaxation, catering to diverse interests. The city is also student-friendly, with affordable living costs and excellent public transportation.

To help you get started in Graz, here are some useful tips and links.

LIVING IN GRAZ

Room prices in student residences or shared flats range from €150 to €450 per month. If you are looking for a place in a student residence, it is best to write directly to the various residence administrations. For the winter semester, it is advisable to submit an application by April at the latest. This is because places in student residences are in great demand in Graz. The housing market is at least as tight. We therefore recommend starting your search at least 2-3 months before the move-in date.

GETTING AROUND

The best way to get around Graz is by bike. You can get basically anywhere by bike, as the large network of cycle paths ensures safe cycling across the city. A good tip: make sure you buy a good lock and make sure your lights work! Cheap bikes can be found on www.willhaben.at

Should you not be a fan of cycling or need to travel a little further, you can use public transport. Graz has tram, bus and night bus services. Students up to the age of 26 are eligible for a discount for Graz public transport in the form of a semester ticket (“Studienkarte”). You can find details here: www.holding-graz.at/en/mobilitaet/ticketshop.

Sport and Culture

The first destination for sporty students is the University Sports Institute at KF University. A wide variety of sports is offered here. Initial registrations must be made online at the beginning of the semester after pre-registration at the USI office or later directly at the office. Courses such as soccer or volleyball are very popular. The early bird catches the worm!

Graz was the European Capital of Culture in 2003, which can still be felt and seen today. There is a lot to see and experience.

German course

While most people in Austria speak English, learning German is highly recommended as it can significantly enhance your job prospects and help with integration. For example, our partner institution, WIFI, offers German courses at all levels, with discounts available for our students. The course normally costs 460 €, however our students receive a 25 % discount. Furthermore, if you regularly attend the course, you will receive a so-called education voucher worth 172,50 €, which you can later use to pay the tuition fees at CAMPUS 02 UAS.  If you do not attend the course after registering or withdraw before it ends, you will be required to pay the full amount.

The courses are conveniently located near CAMPUS 02. For more information, please get in touch with info@stmk.wifi.at.

Scholarship

Our institution offers a merit-based scholarship for students with the best notes after completing at least 30 ECTS credits.

At www.grants.at, Austria’s most comprehensive database for scholarships and research funding, you will find an overview of a great number of financial support options. Please note that there are hardly any financial support options for students in bachelor’s programmes.

Third country nationals must submit their application for a “Residence Permit – Student” at the competent Austrian representative authority (embassy, consulate with power to issue visa) in their country of residence and await the decision there before they can travel to Austria. Please note that in this case, the application deadline for our study programme is moved forward to the end of February which will give you enough time to sort out the visa process before the semester starts.

As entry or residence permit applications can take a longer period of time (at least 3 months), we advise you to get in contact with the respective offices straight after you got the acceptance letter!

Nationals of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia who hold a biometric passport do not need a visa to enter and to reside in Austria up to 90 days within 180 days. Therefore, if you are allowed to enter Austria without a visa, you can directly apply in Graz for a “Residence Permit – Student” during your permitted visa-free stay in Austria.
