Our graduate of the month impressively demonstrates just how versatile a degree in Marketing &amp; Sales can be. Today, Richard B\u00f6hmer holds a management position in the corporate banking division at Volksbank Steiermark AG. This idea was already on my mind when I applied for the Bachelor\u2019s programme and remains a key driving force for me to this day. What particularly convinced me from the outset was that market orientation and sales would continue to be crucial factors for success in the future. It was precisely this practical, future-oriented degree programme that gave me the confidence that I was acquiring the right foundations for my career path.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Can you share a special memory or highlight from your time studying?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>When I look back on my time at university, I find it hard to single out any one moment. And yet one event stands out in particular: the graduation ceremony marking the completion of my Master\u2019s degree. At that moment, everything came together \u2013 the beaming faces of my fellow students, the visible pride of our families, and the deep gratitude for everything we had achieved together. That day marked far more than just the end of a phase of study. It symbolised many intensive periods of learning, exciting projects and countless discussions about markets, strategies and business models. At the same time, I remember the friendships that were formed during that time and which continue to have an impact to this day.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>What skills or knowledge that you acquired at FH CAMPUS 02 have been the most helpful in your professional career?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>In terms of content, the course has particularly helped me to gain a better understanding of business models and corporate processes. Now, working in a bank\u2019s corporate banking division, I deal with annual accounts and contribution margins on a daily basis. Thanks to the course, I can see many interrelationships more clearly and better assess a company\u2019s success.<\/p>\n<p>I also found it particularly fascinating to explore the unique characteristics of services. It was only during my studies that I realised just how many factors are at play here \u2013 far beyond the interaction between client and consultant. The content on purchasing processes and the factors influencing decision-making was equally formative. This fundamental understanding helps me in virtually every client meeting today. I can combine theoretical knowledge with the practical experience of entrepreneurs, and that is precisely what creates lasting value.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>What did your career path look like after graduation? What stations did you go through?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>In 2022, I completed a Master\u2019s degree in Sales Management at CAMPUS 02 UAS. In 2023, I completed my training as a commercial client advisor. From August 2025, I had the privilege of working as Deputy Branch Manager in Hartberg-F\u00fcrstenfeld, with a focus on corporate banking. Since November 2025, I have been Regional Manager for corporate banking in South-East Styria and also a member of the Board of Directors of VB-Beteiligungsgenossenschaft S\u00fcd-Oststeiermark eG.<\/p>\n<p>Each role has not only given me new responsibilities, but has also sharpened my understanding of strategic issues. Looking back, every step has been a valuable learning experience that has helped me grow both professionally and personally.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>What role do marketing and sales skills play in a bank\u2019s corporate banking business?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Marketing and sales are central to my work. A market-oriented approach must be evident across all areas of the business, particularly at a time when information flows and decision-making cycles are accelerating. The sale of products and services remains essential for economic success. The tools and methods I learnt during my studies help me today to analyse information in a structured way and make well-founded decisions. I use this knowledge every day \u2013 whether in direct discussions with business owners or when considering strategies for the further development of our business division.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>How important is the combination of numerical literacy and relationship-building in your day-to-day work?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>A solid understanding of numbers is indispensable in my profession. We work daily with annual financial statements and forecasts and are in close contact with business owners as well as their tax and business advisers. At the same time, relationship management is a key factor for success: only those who build trust over the long term and invest in relationships can create genuine added value \u2013 for both the client and the bank. In my view, the interplay of analytical expertise and human sensitivity will become increasingly important in the future.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Are there specific trends or developments in the field of Marketing &amp; Sales that students should keep an eye on?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>At present, I am particularly focused on the changes surrounding artificial intelligence and the opportunities and risks associated with it. It is fascinating to observe how AI can be used effectively in day-to-day work. At the same time, in-depth specialist knowledge is becoming increasingly important. Those who can critically question, analyse and strategically use data gain a clear advantage. The ability to assess information and use it strategically will be a key asset for every professional in the future.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>How important are continuing professional development and lifelong learning in this field \u2013 and how do you stay up to date both professionally and personally?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Continuing professional development is second nature to me. Marketing and sales are constantly evolving, and markets and methods continue to develop. In banking, there is also the ongoing need to meet regulatory requirements. At the same time, I learn a great deal through exchanging ideas with business owners from a wide range of industries. This insight into different perspectives broadens my horizons every day.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>What advice would you give to our students who are just starting out but have big ambitions?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Patience, perseverance and belief in my own path have helped me enormously. Equally important is having the right support network \u2013 people who back you up and believe in you, even when things get tough.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>How important were your network and contacts from university for your success today?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The diversity of characters and industries that come together during my studies opens up new perspectives.
